[Condolences] HH Mr. Fitzroy Regis

The Industrial Court family is profoundly saddened by the news of the passing of former Judge, His Honour Mr. Fitzroy Regis, affectionately known as Roy Regis.

HH Mr. Regis was appointed a Member of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago on December 1, 1994, and dedicated 11 years to the Court, serving in the General Services Division. He brought with him extensive experience in Industrial Relations, having held the position of Group Industrial Relations Manager at Neal & Massy Holdings Limited, served as an Executive Member of the Employers’ Consultative Association, and participated in the Standing Tripartite Committee on the Revision of the Retrenchment and Severance Benefits Act No. 32 of 1985. During his time on the bench, he presided over one of the Court’s landmark cases: Trade Dispute 96/96 between the Seamen and Waterfront Workers’ Trade Union and Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago.

Beyond his work at the Industrial Court, he had a deep passion for sports and was widely known for his enthusiasm for the steelpan. He was an active member of the Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra and the Pan Jazz Association.

The President, Judges, Registrar, and Staff of the Industrial Court extend their heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, friends, and loved ones during this time of sorrow.

May his soul rest in peace.

New Member Appointed at the industrial Court

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: Her Honour Mrs. Enid Zephyrine has been appointed a Member of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago by Her Excellency Christine Kangaloo, O.R.T.T, President of The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and will serve in the General Services Division of the Court.

Her Honour Mrs. Zephyrine, who is a Charted Certified Accountant (ACCA), has served in the Public Sector of Trinidad and Tobago for well over forty-five years. She is the holder of a Master of Science in International Money Finance and Investment from Brunel University, London and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom (UK). She also holds a Post Graduate certificate in Project Planning Appraisal Management from Bradford University, UK and certification in Public Administration from the University of the West Indies.

The Industrial Court congratulates Her Honour Mrs. Enid Zephyrine on her appointment and looks forward to working together during her tenure.

INDUSTRIAL COURT EXTENDS CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF MR. JUSTICE MICHAEL DE LA BASTIDE

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: The President, Vice President, Chairman of the Essential Services Division, Members, Registrar and Staff of the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago join with the legal and judicial fraternity and, by extension, the national community, in mourning the passing of former Chief Justice of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and former President of the Caribbean Court of Justice, the Honourable Mr. Justice Michael de la Bastide QC, TC.

Mr. Justice de la Bastide was a practitioner at the Industrial Court when the Court first held its sittings at the Red House in the 1960s. In 2014, on the occasion of the Court’s 50th anniversary, he shared his experiences as a practitioner at the Court, among other things, he said, “… I benefitted from practicing in the Industrial Court; it brought one up against points of view and attitudes that were not encountered in the normal course of court practice. There were people with different philosophies, with more liberal ideas, and people presenting cases and views with great skill and persuasiveness.”

A brilliant mind and highly esteemed figure in the legal community, Justice de la Bastide contributed significantly to the industrial relations jurisprudence of Trinidad and Tobago. The Industrial Court has been guided on the often-raised issue of worker under section 2 (3) (e) of the Industrial Relations Act, by his landmark judgment Claude Albert versus Alstons Building Enterprises Limited, Court of Appeal 37/00. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of the Honourable Mr. Justice Michael de la Bastide QC, TC during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
